چکیده

In the past decade tens of millions of dollars have been spent by water resource agencies in California to restore the native salmon fishery in the San Joaquin River and its major tributaries. An excavated deep water ship channel (DWSC), through which the river runs on its way to the Bay/Delta and Pacific Ocean, experiences episodes of low dissolved oxygen which acts as a barrier to anadromous fish migration and a threat to the long-term survival of the salmon run. An emergency response management system is under development to forecast these episodes of low dissolved oxygen and to deploy measures that will raise dissolved oxygen concentrations to prevent damage to the fishery resource. The emergency response management system has been designed to interact with a real-time water quality monitoring network and is served by a comprehensive data management and forecasting model toolbox. The Bay/Delta and Tributaries (BDAT) Cooperative Data Management System is a distributed, web accessible database that contains terabytes of information on all aspects of the ecology of the Bay/Delta and upper watersheds. The complexity of the problem dictates data integration from a variety of monitoring programs. A unique data templating system has been constructed to serve the needs of cooperating scientists who wish to share their data and to simplify and streamline data uploading into the master database. In this paper we demonstrate the utility of such a system in providing decision support for management of the San Joaquin River fishery. We discuss how the system might be expanded to have further utility in coping with other emergencies and threats to water supply system serving California's costal communities.

Hierarchical modeling of juvenile chinook salmon survival as a function of Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta water exports

1 A multi-year study in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta system was carried out to exam2 ine the relationship between the survival of out-migrating Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus 3 tshawytscha and the amount of water exported from the system by the two major pumping 4 stations in the southern portion of the Delta. Paired releases of groups of coded-wire-tagged 5 juvenile late-fall run Chinook salm...

Projecting cumulative benefits of multiple river restoration projects: an example from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River system in California.

Despite increasingly large investments, the potential ecological effects of river restoration programs are still small compared to the degree of human alterations to physical and ecological function. Thus, it is rarely possible to "restore" pre-disturbance conditions; rather restoration programs (even large, well-funded ones) will nearly always involve multiple small projects, each of which can...

Seasonal variations in concentrations of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in drinking water and reclaimed wastewater in southern California.

Southern California imports nearly all of its potable water from two sources: the Colorado River and the California State Water Project (Sacramento-San Joaquin River Basin). Sewage treatment plant effluent (STPE) heavily impacts both of these sources. A survey of raw and treated drinking water from four water filtration plants in San Diego County showed the occurrence of several polar organic "...

Pyrethroid insecticide concentrations and toxicity in streambed sediments and loads in surface waters of the San Joaquin Valley, California, USA.

Pyrethroid insecticide use in California, USA, is growing, and there is a need to understand the fate of these compounds in the environment. Concentrations and toxicity were assessed in streambed sediment of the San Joaquin Valley of California, one of the most productive agricultural regions of the United States. Concentrations were also measured in the suspended sediment associated with irrig...
